Carlsbad Through a Local’s Eye: Codie Cabral
Codie Cabral is a familiar face along our Carlsbad coastline. A mom of two raising her little ones by the beach and someone who effortlessly blends strength, softness, and community wherever she goes. A holistic health coach and fit model, Codie has a gift for creating spaces where women feel seen, supported, and genuinely connected.
Surfing found her during a chapter when she needed something that belonged solely to her. A place where her nervous system could settle, where joy came back in small, salty bursts, and where she could simply show up as herself. She didn’t paddle out to become “good.” She paddled out because the ocean offered presence, play, and a spark she’d been missing.
One early morning session changed everything. As she watched the sun rise over the water, she wondered how she could share that feeling — that reset, that hope — with other moms. The answer led her to create Moms Who Kinda Surf, a beginner-friendly surf and wellness community for moms looking to try something new, reconnect with themselves, and meet others walking through the same season of life.
“What started as a simple idea has grown into a movement rooted in presence, courage, play, and the reminder that you don’t have to be a pro to find magic — sometimes you just have to show up and let the waves meet you.”
We caught up with Codie and asked her to share the Carlsbad places, routines, and moments she’s loving most right now.
The Happy, Outdoorsy Community Energy
Carlsbad has this lightness to it — families outside, moms on walks, surfers heading to the beach, everyone smiling. It feels like a genuinely happy place to raise kids and connect with people who love being outdoors as much as we do.
Sunset Culture
I love living in a town where people literally gather to watch the sun go down. Whether it’s from the wall on Tamarack, the sand, or even just the sidewalk — sunset is a moment here, and everyone pauses for it.
The Sound Of The Train
The train passing by is such a simple thing, but it’s one of my favorite parts of living by the coast. It makes the whole village feel charming and alive, like a little coastal movie moment every time.
My Go-To Local Spots
Carlsbad has the best little food scene: Shoots, Rev Roasters, Pure Taco, Always Hungry, and of course Vista Bean — I drive to Oceanside just for that one because it’s so worth it.
Golf Cart Rides Into The Village
Loading up the kids and cruising into the Village on the golf cart is one of my favorite family rituals. We grab sweet treats from Choice or The Goods, stroll around, and it always feels like a mini adventure.
Farmers Market Wednesdays
Our weekly trip to the Carlsbad Farmers Market is a ritual I love — the kids running around, grabbing veggies, chatting with vendors, and of course picking up our weekly salmon. It makes us feel so connected to the community.
Beach Days That Feel Like Home
From after-school beach hangs to morning walks with a matcha, the ocean is just woven into our everyday life here. It’s the place where we play, reset, gather with friends, and make most of our memories.
