Places to Cool Off in Carlsbad This Summer

July is hot.
Instead of hiding inside with the blinds shut, here are the spots around town that make the heat a whole lot easier to handle, whether you want sand between your toes, a cold drink in hand, or a blast of AC and nothing else.
Beaches & Pools
Carlsbad Beaches Take your pick: North Carlsbad beaches near the Village are our favorite local pick, just know there are no amenities up there so plan ahead. Tamarack for the good surf spot (hey Warm Waters) parking lot option and walkable distance to a public restroom, South Carlsbad State Beach if you want more room to spread out with bluffs and campground access, or South Ponto for one of the widest stretches of sand around. Terramar makes for a beautiful beach day and also a favorite spot for family photos. Any of them will cool you down on a hot day.
Local tip: check the live Carlsbad Beach (North Carlsbad Beaches) or Terramar webcams before you head out to scope conditions and crowd level.
Agua Hedionda Lagoon Head to the lagoon for calm-water fun. California Watersports rents paddleboards, kayaks, and pedal boats, or launch your own from the Carlsbad Lagoon area ($10) or the free Bayshore Drive public access (permit required, $9/day). Glassy water and easy paddling make it one of the most peaceful ways to spend a hot afternoon.
Local tip: Bayshore Drive is free but street parking only, no restrooms.
Resort Pool Passes (paid link) Turns out you don't need a hotel reservation to spend the day poolside.

Frozen Drinks
Beach City Smoothies Carlsbad Village's OG smoothie spot, right off Carlsbad Village Drive. Local since 2006, and exactly what you want after a beach walk. They are also serving up fresh juices and acai bowls.
Aloha Ice Co. for Hawaiian-style shave ice that feels especially perfect on a warm day.
Klatch Coffee New in town, located inside the Sprouts Bressi Ranch. Their Patio Special Shake hits the spot. If you need a visual, check out our reel about it.

Air-Conditioned Escapes
Movie Theaters When you need a hard reset from the heat, Carlsbad's got options. Regal Carlsbad, in the Shoppes at Carlsbad, has recliner seating and free parking, or go Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas on El Camino Real for reclining seats, full restaurant and bar service, and 3D screens for the family flicks. Either way, you're guaranteed at least two hours of AC and zero sunscreen reapplication.
Museum of Making Music Interactive, kid-friendly, and A/C running inside. A great rainy-day spot that works just as well on a scorcher.
The Shoppes at Carlsbad A solid air conditioned option that comes with indoor food options and a playground, and sometimes that's exactly what a July afternoon calls for.
Kids & Coffee Beat the heat and let the kids run wild indoors at Kids & Coffee, Carlsbad's indoor playground and family café. Play passes, a full coffee bar, zero sunscreen required. This is a place my children asked to come back to right when we leave.
Family-Friendly Water Fun
Alga Norte Aquatic Center A 56-meter pool, a splash pad, plus shade structures scattered around so you can cool off too. Affordable entry for a single visit, $3 per child and $5 per adult. They also offer monthly memberships ranging from $40 (individual) to $62 (family pass) per month.
LEGOLAND Water Park A short drive and worth the splurge if you're already doing a Legoland day. Slides, a wave pool, and chairs everywhere.
Park Hyatt Aviara Day Pass (paid link) This is a real family favorite of ours. Our kids beeline for the waterslide, and the walk-in family Splash Pool right next to it makes the whole layout genuinely easy for parents. Everyone's in view (even from the hot tub) and everyone's entertained.
