Back to school in a beach town has its own rhythm. The mornings are still bright, the afternoons still call for the sand, and somewhere between the last lazy beach day and the first drop-off, we all quietly shift into a new gear. Around here, the season is about more than fresh notebooks and a packed lunchbox. It is the community events that pull us all back together, the local shops and brands we get to support, and (let's be honest) a much-needed reset for the parents doing all the coordinating.
So consider this your friendly Carlsbad back-to-school roundup: where to go, what to grab, who to support close to home, and one very good excuse to take a breath before the routine kicks in.
Ease Into It: Getting Everyone Ready
The smoothest first day starts a week or two before the first day. A few low-lift things that make a real difference:
Slide back into the routine early. Start nudging bedtimes and wake-ups closer to the school schedule now, in ten or fifteen minute steps, so the first Monday is not a shock to anyone (you included).
Do a quick size check. Kids grow over summer, so before you buy a single thing, pull out last year's shoes, backpacks, and jackets and see what still fits. It saves you from doubling up.
Set up a launch pad. Pick one spot by the door for backpacks, water bottles, shoes (ours stay in the garage with the sock station), and signed forms. Mornings get so much easier when everything lives in one place.
Build a homework station. A basket of supplies and a clear surface is all it takes. Let the kids help set it up so they feel some ownership over it.
Label everything. Water bottles, jackets, lunch containers. Future you will be grateful.
Loop the kids in. Let them pick a couple of lunch options, a first-day outfit, and a fun supply or two. A little buy-in goes a long way toward first-day excitement.

Kick things off with a little give-back. On Tuesday, August 11 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Chick-fil-A Carlsbad West is hosting back-to-school crafts and a school supply drive for local teachers and students. Bring five or more new, packaged items from their supply list and you will receive a free entrée (your choice of a sandwich, three-count strips, eight-count nuggets, or a kids meal). It is an easy, feel-good way to help fill a classroom while the kids get crafty. Offer valid at the Carlsbad West location only.
The Shoppes at Carlsbad Back-to-School Bash | Saturday, August 15
Free family fun, mall edition. On Saturday, August 15 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, head to the Lower Level Court near Dave and Busters at The Shoppes at Carlsbad for a Back-to-School Bash packed with a DJ, game show trivia, bingo, a photo booth, a keychain-making station, face painting, balloon twisting, giveaways, and more. Bring the kids, grab a treat, and knock out a little shopping while you are there.
Back 2 School Bash at Poinsettia Park | Thursday, August 20
On Thursday, August 20 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Poinsettia Park turns into a free community celebration hosted by Mayor Pro Tem Priya Bhat-Patel and Carlsbad Unified Board President Michele Ward. Think live music, food, gelato, giveaways, and a chance to connect with dozens of local organizations, from Senor Grubby's and Gelato Love to Girls on the Run, Kids for Peace, WEPlay Nature Kids, and many more. It is equal parts block party and resource fair, and it is a lovely way to close out summer together at one of our favorite Carlsbad parks.

Happening Now: The Alternative Retail Kids' Warehouse Sale
If you have littles, start here. The mall is your one-and-done. Between Macy's, Zara, H&M, Cotton On, and Hollister, you can handle clothes, shoes, and basics in a single trip, then reward everyone with a bite from the food options or play a few games at Dave & Busters (summer play passes don’t expire until September). Local tip: If you've got littles in tow, time your visit around the Kathryn the Grape Dance Party, live music for children and families every Tuesday at 11 AM in the Kids Playground Area on Level 1. It's geared toward the younger crowd, so it's a fun way to keep the littles happy while an older sibling shops, or a little pre- or post-shopping wiggle break for the whole family.
